Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Nabin accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of acting as a toolkit for foreign forces trying to destabilize India. Mr. Nabin made these remarks on Monday during a party procession in Kolkata titled 'Save Democracy, End Anarchy'. He claimed that Mr. Gandhi is leading those trying to create unrest in the country and compared the situation to recent events in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Europe.
Kolkata Procession
The march began at College Street and moved toward Dharmatala in central Kolkata with thousands of supporters. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya joined the procession alongside Mr. Nabin. The event followed a rally held a day earlier by the opposition INDIA bloc at Delhi's Ramlila Grounds to protest vote theft allegations and the Special Intensive Revision.
Political Arguments
Mr. Nabin criticized the Congress party for targeting constitutional institutions and claimed the party only blames the Constitution and democracy when it loses elections. He questioned how Congress could complain about the Election Commission while winning the Keralam Assembly elections. He also questioned the new alliance between Congress and Mamata Banerjee after Rahul Gandhi previously criticized her administration during the state elections. Mr. Adhikari stated at the rally that the BJP won power in West Bengal in 2026 with 2.92 crore votes, and defined SIR as an acronym meaning 'Remove Infiltrators, Save India'.
Context
Political parties in India often hold large street protests and marches in major cities like Kolkata to mobilize public support and challenge rival political alliances. The Special Intensive Revision and election-related disputes are frequent points of political debate between national ruling parties and regional or opposition blocs.
