King Charles has backed an Australian project to cut oil use in global shipping during the Commonwealth summit in Antigua. ## The Event The monarch met Australian leader Anthony Albanese and resources tycoon Andrew Forrest on a 75-metre ship called the Fortescue Green Pioneer. The vessel uses green ammonia alongside normal diesel fuel to lower carbon emissions. Forrest hosted over ten Commonwealth chiefs on the deck to promote clean energy alternatives to fossil fuels. The gathering included heads of government from nations such as Tonga, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and Mozambique. While Charles talked with Albanese during the visit, he did not deliver a speech to the group. Albanese praised the King for his work on the environment and argued that clean power will cut expenses and grow the economy. ## The New Fund The leaders also launched the Commonwealth Nature Initiative with an initial $288 million to protect natural habitats and oceans by the year 2030. The project aims to collect $1 billion in total funding. It will coordinate money from governments, private givers, and public donors rather than operating as a single pooled fund. Key backers include the Minderoo Foundation led by Forrest and his former wife Nicola, the Rob Walton Foundation, the Rainforest Trust, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Waitt Foundation, and National Geographic Pristine Seas. Prime Minister Albanese did not pledge any direct Australian money for the project during the event. ## Context The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting brings together dozens of member nations every two years to discuss shared goals and global issues. Island nations from the Pacific and Caribbean regions often push for urgent international action on climate change due to rising sea levels and weather threats. The British monarch serves as the head of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of mostly former British colonies.
