Indian equity markets rallied sharply on Monday, led by a massive surge in Reliance Industries and positive quarterly corporate earnings. The 30-share Sensex jumped 1,233.25 points, or 1.66 percent, to close at 75,692.78, marking its highest level since September 7. The Nifty 50 climbed 387.70 points, or 1.68 percent, to settle at 23,440.80, reaching its strongest close in over five weeks.

Market Details

Reliance Industries spearheaded the gains among Sensex constituents, leaping 11.64 percent after reporting a record quarterly profit of ₹29,550 crore for the July-September period, up 33.8 percent from the previous year. This stellar performance was fueled by strong results in its oil-to-chemicals business alongside telecom growth, which easily outweighed a subdued retail segment. Broader market participation remained heavily positive with 2,445 stocks advancing against 1,164 declines. Sectoral gains were spearheaded by Nifty Oil and Gas up 5.95 percent, and Metal up 3.21 percent, while Media and IT indices finished in the red. Meanwhile, MarketSmith India highlighted Tanla Platforms and Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts among its stock picks.

Context

Market indices like the Sensex and Nifty track the overall health and daily performance of top-listed companies on Indian stock exchanges. Major index movements are frequently driven by heavyweight corporate earnings reports and shifting macroeconomic factors like global crude oil prices.
