Assistant Commissioner of Police Manasvi Vashishta has been placed under suspension for violation of discipline after leading a protest outside the Delhi Police headquarters. Mr. Vashishta joined around 100 police personnel outside Gate No. 1 of the headquarters on Monday morning to demand a meeting with Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar.
Background
The protest followed an October 23 altercation at the Shahdara police station involving an advocate named Lalit Bansal who sustained a head injury. City lawyers launched an indefinite strike and alleged that Mr. Vashishta and Shahdara Station House Officer Arun Kumar threatened advocates who sought action in the assault case. Both officers were subsequently transferred, prompting the police personnel to gather and demand their reinstatement alongside other measures.
Demands And Meeting
During the three-hour demonstration, protesters raised five key demands including a standard operating procedure for handling confrontations with lawyers and restricting lawyer entry to five at a time. They also asked for FIRs against lawyers involved in misconduct, a dedicated complaint cell at police headquarters, and police deployment in courts based on their size. Commissioner Anurag Kumar and senior officers eventually met the protesters to hear their grievances.
