India and Israel stood alone in opposing a United Nations resolution moved by Pakistan and Belarus regarding conventional weapons control at regional and subregional levels. The UN General Assembly's First Committee passed the draft resolution with 180 nations voting in favour and no abstentions recorded during the session on Monday, November 2, 2026.
India's Objections
Speaking at the UN, First Secretary Anmol Sher Bedi explained that New Delhi views weapons control as a global issue rather than something that fits neatly into local areas. Bedi noted that India's negative vote aligns with its previous stance on the matter. He also questioned why the text asks the UN Disarmament Commission to draft new regional frameworks when the body already reached consensus agreements on disarmament topics in 1993, 1999, and 2017.
Security Concerns
Bedi criticized the idea of keeping military capabilities balanced inside narrow regional limits, pointing out that national security worries do not stop at borders. India specifically opposed a paragraph highlighting conventional arms proposals linked to South Asia, while the broader resolution argues that most modern security threats happen between neighboring states.
Context
The UN General Assembly First Committee deals with disarmament and international security matters before they go to the full assembly for final votes. India frequently maintains an independent stance on multilateral arms control treaties and resolutions that it believes do not reflect broader global security realities.
