Three people sustained injuries after an omnibus collided with a lorry carrying empty liquor bottles on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway in Vellore on Tuesday.

What Happened

The crash occurred at around 2 a.m. at Alamelumangapuram in Vellore town when the omnibus driver lost control and hit the lorry from behind. The omnibus was traveling from Bengaluru to Chennai with 22 passengers on board, while the lorry was transporting roughly 47,000 empty TASMAC liquor bottles from Vaniyambadi to a godown in Maduravoyal. The impact caused the lorry to overturn and scatter bottles across the road. The omnibus then crashed into a steel median and crossed over into the opposite lane of the highway.

Response And Impact

All 22 passengers on the omnibus escaped without injuries. However, the omnibus driver S. Aravindran (23), lorry driver T. Gubenthiran (48), and lorry cleaner Mohammed Rafiq (39) were injured and admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, where doctors report their condition is stable. Passersby and motorists called the ambulance and Sathuvachari police. Superintendent of Police N.U. Sivaraman visited the site to oversee the response. The accident disrupted traffic flow on the route, forcing authorities to divert vehicles onto the service lane while police launched an investigation.

Context

National highways connecting major cities like Chennai and Bengaluru experience heavy night traffic involving both passenger buses and freight carriers. Highway accidents of this nature frequently cause temporary traffic blockages until police and emergency services clear debris and restore normal vehicle movement.
