Balrampur Chini Mills Stock Jumps 9 Percent on Heavy Trading Volume
Reported by Rituparna Sen (Section Editor) · Livemint - Markets ·

Shares of Balrampur Chini Mills rose 9 percent on Tuesday, November 3, to close at 655 rupees apiece, marking the stock's biggest single-day gain since mid-August.
Market Drivers
There was no direct fundamental trigger for the rebound, but a sharp spike in trading volume helped the stock recover from recent weakness. Around 7.7 million shares changed hands across the BSE and NSE during the session, which is nearly 12.2 times the stock's weekly average volume based on Trendlyne data. A recovery in the broader market and a strong September-quarter financial report from peer firm Triveni Engineering and Industries also supported investor sentiment. Despite this recovery, Balrampur Chini Mills shares remain down around 11 percent from their October high of 736 rupees and nearly 16 percent below their record peak of 781 rupees.
Triveni Engineering Results
Triveni Engineering and Industries reported a more than fourfold jump in consolidated net profit to 93.65 crore rupees for the quarter ended September, compared to a net loss of 11 crore rupees in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Total income rose to 2,069 crore rupees in the second quarter of financial year 2027 from 1,927 crore rupees in the year-ago period. For the first half of financial year 2027, the company's net profit increased to 97.30 crore rupees from 23.48 crore rupees. The company stated that higher profit was driven by better sugar margins, higher realisations, a greater proportion of high-margin maize feedstock, better distillers dried grains with solubles realisations, lower finance costs, and higher alcohol volumes.
Industry Outlook
Triveni Engineering expects domestic sugar prices to remain firm in the short term due to tighter carry-over stocks and an expected monsoon deficit caused by El Nino, which could reduce production in the coming sugar season. However, the company noted that government policy measures like monthly release quotas, stockholding restrictions, and imports could influence price trends. It also highlighted that oil marketing companies' tenders for the Ethanol Supply Year 2026-27 provide for zero diversion of sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, and B-heavy molasses towards ethanol production, which may support sugar availability while reducing feedstock flexibility for integrated sugar companies.
Context
Stock prices in the sugar sector often react to both company earnings reports and broader market movements, as well as regulatory updates on ethanol policies and sugar supplies. Changes in government rules on sugar stock limits and ethanol blending can directly affect the business operations of domestic sugar producers.
