Gujarat reached 300 for five on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match against Kerala at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday. An unbroken, counterattacking 111-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Urvil Patel and Vishal Jayswal rescued the hosts. Urvil finished the day batting on 63 runs from 67 balls with seven fours and one six, while Vishal contributed an unbeaten 50 runs from 83 balls with three fours and two sixes.
Match Turning Point
Earlier in the day, Kerala reduced Gujarat to 189 for five shortly after tea when Aditya Sarvate had Jaymeet Patel stumped by Mohammed Azharuddeen for one run. However, Kerala missed crucial chances to press the advantage. Rohan Kunnummal dropped a skier from Vishal when the batter was on 33, and Azharuddeen fumbled a chance when Urvil was on 32. Top-scorer Aarya Desai led the early charge with 95 runs from 132 balls before top-edge a wild slog off Vaisakh Chandran to be caught by Vishnu Vinod just short of his century.
Context
This match forms part of the ongoing Ranji Trophy, India's premier domestic first-class cricket championship organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Lower-order partnerships often prove decisive in multi-day red-ball cricket when teams recover from mid-innings collapses to build competitive totals on the first day.
