UPDATE - follow-up to Cyclone Murasu: rains inundate low-lying areas in Eluru district; Collector orders evacuation: Incessant rain from Cyclone Murasu has inundated low-lying areas across several mandals in the Eluru district, uprooting trees and leaving main roads under knee-deep water over the past 24 hours.
Official Response
District Collector K. Vetri Selvi held a review meeting with officials from the Revenue, Irrigation, Panchayat Raj, Police, and other departments on Tuesday, directing them to continuously monitor the situation. Officials reported rainfall in Kalidindi, Eluru Urban, Denduluru, Nidamarru, Mandavalli, and Mudinepalli mandals. The Collector ordered teams deployed for cyclone duties to move residents from vulnerable areas and old houses to safer locations.
Safety Measures
Headmasters must check electrical cables and submit reports on the condition of school buildings and power supply. Irrigation Department engineers are closely monitoring water levels in the Kovvada, Tammileru, Jalleru, and Yerrakaluva rivers. Authorities urged citizens to avoid taking shelter under trees, near electric poles, or close to hoardings. Meanwhile, Fire, National Disaster Response Force, and State Disaster Response Force teams are conducting rescue and relief work with flood-duty personnel.
Context
Tropical cyclones frequently bring heavy downpours and strong winds to coastal regions, leading to severe waterlogging and river overflow. Local administrations routinely deploy disaster response forces and order evacuations in low-lying zones to prevent loss of life during severe weather events.
