Former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has criticized Chennai Super Kings for planning to enter IPL 2027 without a specialist batting coach, calling the decision a shock and strategically wrong.

Management Changes

Five-time champions CSK confirmed they will not have a batting coach after three poor seasons where they missed the playoffs. The management cleared out most of the coaching staff, parting ways with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming and batting coach Michael Hussey, who had held the role since 2018. Zaheer Khan was named as the new head coach, while Mohit Sharma and Albie Morkel joined as bowling and assistant coaches, and Gareth Batty became the second assistant coach. Sridharan Sriram and James Foster were retained by the franchise.

Batting Struggles

Ramesh noted that while CSK ranked in the top two for the lowest average runs conceded over the last two seasons, they sat in the bottom two for average team totals at 178. He questioned the heavy focus on bowling staff like Zaheer Khan, Mohit Sharma, Gareth Batty, and Albie Morkel while leaving the batting position empty despite having several young batters in the squad.

Future Outlook

Ramesh also raised the possibility that MS Dhoni, whose playing future is still uncertain, might take on a mentoring role to guide the young batters. He stated that the team should have balanced their coaching hires instead of loading up on the bowling side if Dhoni does not return as a player.

Context

Franchises often restructure their coaching teams and management staff heavily after consecutive seasons without reaching the playoffs. Expert analysis on team setups frequently highlights the need for a balance between specialized batting and bowling guidance to support developing players.
