Voting Machine Troubles in Georgia and New York as Americans Head to Polls
Reported by Shreya Kapoor (Senior Writer) · CBS News - Politics ·
Fulton County officials report two separate ballot machine problems affecting two polling locations and about 1,000 early-voting ballots. One site faced paper jams, while another experienced power issues that raised concerns about data corruption. Officials plan to ask the election board to rescan the affected ballots in public view. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger states he does not expect these issues to delay any election results. Meanwhile, in Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek cast his ballot and faces GOP Representative Ashley Hinson for an open Senate seat. Turek linked Hinson to wealth issues, pointing to her husband Matt Arenholz's stake in Highstreet Insurance Partners, though Hinson denies trading stocks or that her husband acts as a lobbyist. PolitiFact notes the source of wealth is Arenholz's stake received after selling his insurance agency to the private-equity-backed company. House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed recent polls during a campaign stop in Virginia with former Governor Glenn Youngkin and Representative Jen Kiggans, claiming control of the House will rest on about 21 seats. In Minnesota, the secretary of state's office reports over 886,427 early votes cast, breaking the previous 2022 midterm record of 687,062. Minneapolis alone saw nearly 69,000 early votes. In New York, Westchester County's Board of Legislators announced that every eligible vote will be counted despite scanner problems, with Attorney General Letitia James monitoring the situation. The issue affects parts of the 17th U.S. House District, where Republican incumbent Mike Lawler faces Democrat Cait Conley.
Context
Election days across the United States regularly feature localized administrative hurdles, such as equipment glitches or high early-voting turnout, which election boards work to resolve to ensure every ballot is securely counted. State officials and local boards typically use backup procedures like manual rescanning or secure ballot storage to maintain integrity when technical problems occur.
