The Trinamool Congress has lost both its chairperson berths in a major reshuffle of six standing parliamentary committees following a split in the party after the West Bengal assembly elections. The commerce committee, previously led by TMC Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, is now headed by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi. Meanwhile, the chemicals committee led by TMC MP Kirti Azad will now be led by Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who led a rebel faction claiming merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India.
Reactions And Changes
TMC parliamentary leader Derek O'Brien wrote a strong letter of protest to Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan over the removal, pointing out that his party is the third largest in the upper house yet was deprived of a chairperson post. In other changes announced by the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress MP Digvijaya Singh was replaced by Mukul Wasnik on the education committee. The BJP also replaced three of its own committee heads, substituting Brij Lal with Sujeet Kumar on the law and justice committee, Basavaraj Bommai with Shashank Mani on the labour committee, and C M Ramesh with Sudhir Gupta on the railways committee. Several other leaders from parties like the DMK, Congress, and Samajwadi Party retained their positions.
Context
Parliamentary standing committees play a vital role in examining draft bills and government policies in detail away from the floor of the house. These panels are reconstituted annually with members drawn from both houses of Parliament to maintain bipartisan oversight on governance.
