Commercial LPG Price Hike and Festive Inflation Strain Household Budgets

Commercial LPG cylinder prices have increased by 70 rupees ahead of the festive and wedding season, straining household budgets and commercial kitchens. According to Hindustan, the price hike affects tea stalls, restaurants, and marriage halls, potentially leading to the removal of gas-heavy dishes from party menus. Diesel prices remain at high levels, making distant catering and running furnaces difficult for small and medium business owners who cannot constantly raise food prices. At the same time, home appliances including air conditioners, refrigerators, and televisions have become up to 8 percent more expensive since October 1, raising concerns among electronic traders about dampened festive sales for Diwali and Dhanteras. Local traders report that customers are confused by the new rates, and repeated price increases risk derailing trade.
Checking Gas Levels
Households worried about rising costs can check remaining LPG levels at home without special meters using simple tricks, especially during festivals when cooking increases. Pouring water down the side of a cylinder and feeling the surface reveals where the liquid LPG absorbs heat, leaving the cylinder cool where gas remains and normal or warm where it is empty. For a more precise measurement, weigh the cylinder on a scale and subtract the tare weight printed on it; for example, a total weight of 28.5 kilograms with a 15.5-kilogram tare weight leaves about 13 kilograms of gas. Stove burner flames can also signal low gas if they appear weak or take longer to cook food, though dirty burners can also affect flame appearance.
Context
Festive seasons in India traditionally see high demand for consumer goods, cooking gas, and electronics, making price shifts during this period particularly sensitive for family budgets and small businesses. Rising input costs for commercial operations frequently pressure local vendors to balance narrow profit margins against consumer price resistance.
