Representative image · PexelsThirty-one riders gathered to test their skills at the KTM Adventure Rally Extreme, an event designed to give customers a true taste of rally raid racing. The group included KTM customers and six media personnel who each paid a participation fee of Rs 5,000 to cover event setup and meals. The main attraction for many was the presence of 2018 Dakar winner Matthias Walkner.
Four Stages
The day was split into four distinct stages to test different abilities. First came a timed prologue over jumps, turns, and a slushy section using a 349cc KTM 390 Adventure, which set the starting order for the next round. A technical issue with a new unit's traction control and ABS was quickly fixed by technicians. The second stage involved digital roadbook navigation across a 3.5km course on slippery terrain after rain. The third stage simulated riding with a disability by removing gear levers, locking bikes in second gear, and forcing riders to navigate slippery grass using only one hand. The final challenge tested mechanical skill, requiring participants to refit a gear lever and reinstall an air filter.
Results and Feedback
Timings from all four stages were added up for overall standings, with the top three riders receiving awards, while the writer finished in fifth place. Despite the fun experience, some issues arose, including a two-hour delay due to registration holdups. Participants also felt that Matthias Walkner's riding demonstration and tips came only after the main riding stages, leaving many wishing for more direct interaction with the champion.
Context
Rally raids are gruelling motorsport events that push both human endurance and machine reliability far beyond standard track racing. Events like this help everyday motorcycle owners understand the intense physical and technical demands required for competitive off-road rallies.
