The Plot
Investigations into the August 30 arms theft at the Secunderabad Cantonment reveal that former Havaldar Upputholla Mallesh built a criminal network of serving soldiers, associates, and alleged arms dealers to fund a series of robberies. Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi stated that Mallesh faced severe financial trouble after his retirement, having spent his money on a house, a plot in Nagarkurnool, and a Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Struggling with family expenses, he hatched a plan with his cousin Upputholla Mallikarjun and friend Chemmakar Niranjan to commit armed heists targeting banks, jewellery stores, and wealthy individuals.
Inside Help
Before breaking into the 20 Madras Regiment premises, Mallesh shared bank robbery videos with his accomplices to study heist methods. After attempts to procure pistols through West Bengal contacts stalled, he targeted his former unit. He conducted reconnaissance at least six times, knowing the facility's CCTV cameras were under repair. Police arrested seven more individuals on October 3, including three serving Army personnel: sepoy Konduri Sheshulu, Kote in-charge Naik Vinod Kumar, and 16 Battalion Havaldar Kucharakanti Praveen. Investigators allege Vinod provided key details about guard positions and the armoury, while Praveen knew of the plot beforehand and received a phone call at midnight stating the work was done.
Context
Armoury security relies heavily on strict inventory controls and active surveillance systems, making insider collusion one of the few ways such secure facilities can be compromised. Police have confirmed that the primary motive behind the operation was financial gain through property offences rather than any extremist activity.
