Kia India has launched its flagship combustion-powered SUV, the Sorento, with prices starting at Rs 27.99 lakh. The vehicle is manufactured in India and serves as the brand's first hybrid offering in the country alongside a diesel option. It competes in the premium three-row SUV market, going up against models like the Volkswagen Tayron, Jeep Meridian, and Skoda Kodiaq, while also sitting in a space above smaller European and American monocoque SUVs and below the Toyota Fortuner.

Powertrain Options

The Sorento provides two distinct powertrain setups. Buyers can choose a 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol strong hybrid engine that produces 230hp and 380Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed torque converter. Alternatively, a 2.2-litre diesel engine puts out 193hp and 442Nm of torque, coupled to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both engines are available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The hybrid version is well-suited for city driving due to its smooth throttle response and a 1.49kWh battery pack that allows for pure-electric operation, delivering a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.6kpl for front-wheel drive and 17.7kpl for all-wheel drive models. For highway driving, the diesel engine offers strong, linear torque delivery and pairs with a smooth wet-clutch DCT.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the Sorento features a cabin built with soft-touch dash materials and physical controls. Higher variants are packed with amenities including dual 12.3-inch screens, a heads-up display, a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, ventilated second-row captain's chairs in the 6-seat layout, and Level 2 ADAS. Other inclusions are a 12-speaker Bose sound system, dual-zone climate control, 64-colour ambient lighting, a camera-based inside rearview mirror, rear-window sunshades, a powered tailgate, and connected car technology. The SUV is offered across three broad trim levels—HTE, HTK, and HTX—which branch out into 32 total variants, alongside eight exterior colour options.

Ride and Pricing

The SUV's suspension is tuned to prioritize comfort, allowing it to glide over rough roads with the help of tall-sidewall tyres. However, the third row of seats has a flat floor mount that results in a knees-up seating posture best suited for small children. Due to its soft springing and 208mm ground clearance, it is less sharp in handling during hard cornering compared to European rivals. Pricing spans broadly across the lineup, beginning at Rs 27.99 lakh for the base diesel front-wheel drive variant, with the diesel reaching up to Rs 38.89 lakh. The hybrid variants range from Rs 29.49 lakh to Rs 40.39 lakh, with top-spec HTX and HTX(A) trims priced between Rs 37.49 lakh and Rs 40.19 lakh.

Context

Automakers in India are expanding their presence in the premium three-row SUV segment by introducing diverse powertrain choices such as strong hybrids and diesels to cater to varying consumer needs between city commutes and highway touring. Flagship models often serve to showcase a brand's highest level of technology, safety features, and interior comfort to stand out in a crowded marketplace.
