A 31-year-old Indian Navy sailor was arrested on October 3 for allegedly sharing secret maritime information with a Pakistani intelligence operative. Officials reported the arrest of Pradeep Mukherjee at INS Agrani, a naval training facility in Coimbatore.
Investigation Details
Pradeep Mukherjee is a native of West Bengal who was posted with the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. At the time of his arrest, he was attending a management development course at the Coimbatore facility after arriving there about a week earlier. According to the Andhra Pradesh Police Counter Intelligence cell, a female Pakistani operative contacted the sailor through social media several months ago. Investigators stated that this online relationship was used to collect sensitive details about naval assets, fleet movements, and the working structure of the Visakhapatnam base. The Counter Intelligence cell launched an inquiry after noticing unusual digital activity and placed the sailor under surveillance before making the arrest.
Context
Cases of espionage involving defense personnel often highlight the growing security challenges posed by digital communication and online recruitment tactics. Intelligence agencies regularly monitor online platforms to detect unauthorized sharing of sensitive military data across borders.
