The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated senior leader Dinesh Arya from Uttarakhand to contest the Rajya Sabha poll. The party’s central election committee cleared his name on Sunday. The upper‑house elections are scheduled for 16 October and involve a dozen seats spread across three states. Ten of those seats belong to Uttar Pradesh, one to Uttarakhand and a single vacancy in West Bengal will be filled through a by‑poll. In Uttarakhand, the seat currently held by BJP member Naresh Bansal will become vacant when the incumbent’s term ends on 25 November. The BJP also enjoys a clear majority in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, which influences the by‑poll outcome.
Context
Rajya Sabha members are elected by state legislators, so a party’s strength in a state assembly directly affects its ability to win seats. The BJP’s choice of Arya aims to maintain its presence in the upper house while capitalising on its legislative advantage in West Bengal.
