GeneralKerala Chief Minister Demands Unconditional Apology From CPI(M) Over Malappuram Remarks

Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has demanded an unconditional apology from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for trying to demonise the Muslim-majority Malappuram district as a hive of fundamentalists and communalists.

The Controversy

Mr. Satheesan strongly condemned the communal slurs made by CPI(M) leader P. Nandakumar against the people of Malappuram. He noted that Mr. Nandakumar made these remarks in the presence of former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, who did not object or correct the statements. Mr. Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of using dog-whistle politics borrowed from the Sangh Parivar playbook to appease a right-wing Hindu nationalist base by disparaging minority communities.

Reactions and Actions

CPI(M) State Secretary M. V. Govindan distanced the party from the comments, stating the organisation is ideologically opposed to communal forces. Another CPI(M) leader, K. T. Jaleel, defended the district as a haven for secular forces, while Congress leader V. S. Joy praised Malappuram as a palace built by secular minds. Meanwhile, the Muslim Youth League has filed a police complaint against Mr. Nandakumar for attempting to stoke communal divisions.

Context

Political disputes over minority-majority demographics and regional identities frequently flare up in Indian politics, often drawing sharp reactions from rival parties. Leaders from various political platforms often trade accusations regarding secularism and appeasement during electoral or party meetings.
