Indian stock markets face crucial opening bell after heavy losses and key weekend developments
Reported by Rituparna Sen (Section Editor) · Economic Times - Markets ·
Confirmed by a second source: Livemint - Markets
Sensex and Nifty extended their losses for a fourth straight session, while Livemint notes that key benchmark indices have actually traded lower for the last eight straight sessions amid heavy FII selling, surging bond yields, and elevated crude prices. This ongoing market selloff has erased Rs 5 lakh crore in overall market value. If the Nifty 50 index stays under pressure, it could end lower for the ninth successive week, marking a decline not seen in 25 years.
Market Factors And Expert Views
Stock market experts point to three main factors that will decide market action when trading resumes. Accenture's better-than-expected results are expected to spark strong buying in IT stocks. Meanwhile, the appointment of new managing directors and chief executive officers at HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank is expected to give a boost to the Bank Nifty index. Sandeep Pandey, co-founder of Basav Capital, notes that petrol and diesel price hikes will also impact the Sensex and Nifty 50.
Impact On OMCs And Index Weight
Avinash Gorakshkar, founder of Avinash Mentor Research, states that the petrol and diesel price hike provides relief to oil marketing companies on the under-recovery front, which is positive for OMC stocks including Reliance Industries. Seema Srivastava, senior research analyst at SMC Global Securities, points out that HDFC Bank commands an influence of 11% to 13% of the Nifty 50, 26% to 29% of the Bank Nifty, and about 13% of the BSE Sensex. Kotak Mahindra Bank accounts for about 3% of the Sensex, 2% of the Nifty 50, and 8.50% of the Bank Nifty. Combined, these two lenders hold about 15% weight in the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, and nearly 35% in the Bank Nifty. Analysts advise long-term investors to accumulate shares gradually during this downturn.
Context
Stock markets regularly fluctuate based on a mix of domestic corporate leadership changes, global IT earnings, and macroeconomic pressures like oil prices and foreign investor fund flows. Key index heavyweights like banking and IT stocks often dictate the overall direction of benchmark indices due to their high weightage. Long-term investors frequently use periods of heavy market correction to steadily build their investment portfolios at lower prices.
