India is now taking a more active role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict rather than just talking about peace, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said in New Delhi on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting, he stated that the country wants the war to end through talks and diplomacy. India is currently talking to both Russia and Ukraine to help solve immediate problems like ship safety in the Black Sea, grain exports, energy trade, and avoiding attacks on certain sites.

Historical Ties

Explaining India's long-standing relationship with Moscow, Mr. Jaishankar noted that Russia and the former Soviet Union supported India when its security and borders were under threat. He recalled that this help came at a time when much of the world chose to back a military regime in a neighbouring country. He added that India's interests match with Russia and that past history shapes current ties, even as India faces high costs from distant wars it has no part in.

Global Changes

Mr. Jaishankar also pointed out that the world order is shifting due to a change in how the United States views the world, the rise of China, and the growing use of everyday trade and ties as weapons.

Context

India has traditionally maintained a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, refusing to join Western sanctions against Moscow while pushing for peaceful talks. Leaders often use international security meetings to state their foreign policy positions and explain how global conflicts affect trade and energy supplies for developing nations.
