Lhuan-dre Pretorius set a new benchmark for men's Twenty20 cricket by blasting an unbeaten 188 runs during a domestic fixture in South Africa. The 20-year-old batter achieved the milestone off just 79 balls while playing for the Titans against the Knights in Bloemfontein.
Record Innings
His explosive knock featured 13 sixes and 15 fours, pushing his team to a total of 267-3 in their 20 overs at the Mangaung Oval. This performance surpassed the previous record of 175 not out, which had been held by West Indies star Chris Gayle since the 2013 Indian Premier League. Pretorius reached his fifty in 24 balls, brought up his century 16 deliveries later, and crossed the 150-run mark off 58 balls. According to cricket.com.au, his 79-ball stay also tied him with Australians Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis for the most balls faced in a men's T20 innings, and he came close to scoring the first double century in the format before running out of overs.
Match Outcome
Following the record-setting batting display, the Titans restricted the Knights to 143 runs in 17.2 overs. Ferreira claimed three wickets for 16 runs while Cloete top-scored for the opposition with 39 runs from 25 balls, handing the Titans a comprehensive 124-run victory.
Context
Domestic Twenty20 leagues often witness aggressive batting displays due to fielding restrictions and short boundaries. However, individual scores exceeding 150 remain extremely rare in professional cricket, making innings of this scale historic milestones within the sport.
