Small everyday habits outside the gym can hurt your strength, recovery, and overall fitness results more than you might think. Deepti Sharma, fitness expert and director at MultiFit, shared eight common mistakes people make during their fitness journey in an interview with HT Lifestyle. Skipping a warm-up is the first mistake. Starting heavy lifts immediately with cold muscles and stiff joints makes strains more likely and lowers performance. Sharma suggests spending five to ten minutes on light movements like brisk walking, bodyweight squats, and arm circles before your main workout. Lifting more weight than you can control is the second error. This poor posture stresses your knees, shoulders, and lower back over time. If your form slips during the last few repetitions, the weight is too heavy for that day. Training the same body part daily or working out seven days a week without a break is the third misstep. Muscles repair and grow after exercise, not during it. Most people need one or two rest days a week, though light walking or stretching is fine. Ignoring sleep is the fourth issue. Late nights and early workouts leave the body short on recovery time, which hurts energy, mood, appetite, and performance. Sharma recommends seven to eight hours of sleep. Poor nutrition habits are the fifth mistake. Exercising on an empty stomach, waiting hours to eat, or following crash diets that cut calories too much will leave you weak. A balanced plate with protein sources like paneer, eggs, dal, curd, sprouts, or chicken works far better. Not drinking enough water is the sixth error. Dehydration causes headaches, cramps, and early tiredness, especially in India's hot weather. You should sip water all day rather than drinking a large amount only during exercise. Ignoring pain is the seventh mistake. Normal muscle soreness is different from sharp joint pain, and pushing through the second kind can cause a long injury break. Doing the exact same routine for months is the eighth habit. The body adapts and limits progress, so you need to gradually change your exercises, reps, or intensity.

Context

Fitness experts often point out that physical progress relies just as much on proper rest, nutrition, and recovery habits as it does on the time spent actively exercising in the gym. Understanding these everyday routines helps people avoid common injuries and reach their long-term health goals safely.
