Sugar prices drop to five-week low on high production in India
Reported by Neha Sharma (Staff Writer) · Livemint - Markets ·
Raw sugar prices dropped sharply to reach their lowest intraday level since September 23, driven by data showing high production numbers in India. Raw sugar futures in New York fell by as much as 3.7 percent, while white sugar prices in London also went down.
Production Data
India produced 845,000 tons of sugar from the start of the season through the end of October. This figure is more than eight times higher than the output recorded during the same period last year, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd. Mills started crushing cane earlier than usual, and the Indian government took steps to keep local supplies stable.
Market Factors
Sugar prices had previously risen due to tight stockpiles and fears that a super El Niño weather pattern would hurt crop yields and cause a global deficit. However, the market dropped because traders now expect lower import demand in India and greater export incentives in Brazil caused by a weaker currency. The Brazilian real weakened on Tuesday, which can push farmers to sell more. At the same time, speculative funds cut back on their bullish bets, with money managers trimming their net-long position to a four-week low through October 27 according to the CFTC positioning report.
Industry Reactions
Harsh Soni, an analyst at Greenleaf Consultancy based in Delhi, stated that India's strong start was expected, but markets still react when reality hits. Claudiu Covrig, lead analyst at Covrig Analytics, noted that funds might be taking profits near the end of the year and pointed out that Indian imports are unlikely until April and May next year. Arnaud Lorioz, chief executive officer of Paris-based brokerage Deepcore, stated that the fundamentals have not changed and questioned when the snowball effect will lose momentum. One risk that could reverse the selloff is rain from a strong El Niño disrupting the cane harvest in Brazil, where mills crushed 18 percent less sugarcane in the first half of October compared to the previous year.
Context
Global sugar markets are closely tied to weather patterns and currency shifts in major producing countries like India and Brazil. When production rises in key regions or speculative investors pull their money out, prices can drop quickly even after months of gains.
