Manchester United Faces Roma in High-Stakes Champions League Fixture Amid Growing Pressure on Manager Michael Carrick

UPDATE - follow-up to Manchester United v Roma: Champions League – live: Manchester United enters tonight's Champions League clash against Roma under intense pressure, with manager Michael Carrick facing a possible exit if results do not improve immediately.

Team News and Lineups

United has named a starting lineup featuring Lammens in goal, supported by a back four of Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, and Heaven, while Baleba and Mainoo pair up in midfield alongside Diallo, Cunha, and Fernandes supporting Mbeumo. Roma hands a debut to 28-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vásquez, who previously had a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

Managerial Pressure

Carrick has gone nine matches without a win, leaving the club sitting 17th in the Premier League alongside two previous Champions League defeats. Reports indicate Carrick has until Sunday's home match against Aston Villa to save his job, with two wins required this week to secure his position.

Context

Manchester United's current struggles reflect a broader historic pattern where high expectations and structural challenges weigh heavily on successive managers following the eras of Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson. Top-flight football clubs facing poor domestic form often look to European fixtures as a chance to reset their seasons, though mounting pressure from fans and pundits rarely eases without immediate wins.
