Production End
Range Rover is ending production of the Evoque and the Velar in mid-2027. A JLR spokesperson told Car and Driver that both volume-selling SUVs will be phased out as manufacturing facilities transition to build next-generation vehicles. The models will continue to be sold in selected global markets where demand remains strong throughout 2027. In the United States, the Evoque and Velar accounted for just 6,000 sales through the year, making up only 10 percent of the brand's U.S. sales volume so far.
Replacement Models
The departing SUVs will be effectively replaced by an upcoming Range Rover GT, which is set to arrive as a 2028 model. The new GT takes the shape of a long and low sedan-like vehicle with a minimalist interior and an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain, though the platform can also host gas and hybrid powertrains. The Evoque currently starts at around $52,000 and the Velar at around $64,000, but the upcoming Range Rover GT is expected to start at around $90,000, raising the entry price to the brand.
Market Shifts
JLR's broader strategy shift also saw the discontinuation of the Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV after the 2026 model year. Land Rover's other two brands, Defender and Discovery, are expected to serve customers in the sub-$90,000 price range, with a Defender Sport model reportedly in the works. Meanwhile, Autocar UK reports that the GT and the Range Rover Sport will serve as entry points sitting underneath the full-sized Range Rover in a three-strong line-up.
Context
Automakers frequently update their vehicle lineups and shift manufacturing facilities to focus on new electric platforms and modern vehicle designs. As brands move toward electrification, entry-level internal combustion vehicles often make way for higher-end electric alternatives. This shift changes the price range and options available to buyers looking for a brand's most affordable models.
