Manchester United turned a disastrous two-goal half-time deficit into a wild victory against Roma, saving manager Michael Carrick from an immediate crisis.

First Half Woes

Roma dominated the opening period and took a two-goal lead by the break. Soulé opened the scoring after a quick transition caught United's defence flat-footed. A penalty from Malen extended Roma's lead after Ayden Heaven handled the ball in the box. Fans had protested against the Glazer ownership before and during the match, throwing tennis balls onto the pitch at the twenty-minute mark to mark the year 2005. Carrick's side showed zero cohesion and looked completely outclassed in the first forty-five minutes.

The Great Fightback

United completely transformed after the interval. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot after a retake was ordered for encroachment, following Devis Vásquez saving his initial kick. Matheus Cunha then scored the equaliser with a fine touch and finish after a mistake by Leonardo Balerdi. Cunha struck the winner later in the match, hammering a shot in off the near post after receiving a pass from substitute Shea Lacey. Cunha received a second yellow card in the ninetieth minute and was sent off for a lunge at Balerdi.

Context

This dramatic turnaround offers temporary relief for Manchester United during a turbulent stretch filled with supporter protests and defensive struggles. The club continues to deal with heavy scrutiny regarding its squad depth and ownership as they prepare for their next fixture against Aston Villa.
