Indian stock markets extended their rally for a fourth straight session on Tuesday, driven by falling crude oil prices, strong foreign investor buying, and hopes of tax relief on capital gains. Nifty 50 rose 370.05 points, or 1.58 percent, to close at its day high of 23,810.85, while the Sensex jumped 1,225.07 points, or 1.62 percent, to settle at 76,917.85.

Market Movers

Brent crude slipped to about $105 a barrel, falling roughly 11 percent from Friday's six-month high of $118 on hopes of diplomatic efforts to end the Iran conflict. Foreign investors bought about ₹3,115 crore of Indian shares on Monday. Financials, FMCG, and Realty led the gains, while capital market stocks such as BSE jumped up to 8 percent. Bharti Airtel rose about 5 percent, Asian Paints nearly 4 percent, and HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and IndiGo gained about 3 percent each. Meanwhile, IT, Metal, and Pharma lagged, with ONGC, Power Grid, NTPC, and Sun Pharma among the losers.

Bank Nifty Performance

Nifty Bank gained for a second straight session, rising 537.85 points, or 0.98 percent, to close at 55,540.05. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank led the banking sector gains. State Bank of India ended about 1 percent higher after reporting a 14 percent rise in quarterly profit to ₹23,038 crore alongside a 15 percent increase in net interest income. Market participants are also keeping a close eye on the U.S. midterm election results.

Context

Major benchmark indices like the Nifty 50 and Sensex track the performance of the top publicly traded companies on Indian stock exchanges to reflect overall market health. Fluctuations in global crude oil prices heavily impact India because the country imports the vast majority of its oil requirements. Foreign institutional investments and quarterly corporate earnings serve as key drivers of day-to-day market sentiment and stock valuations.
