Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s governorship on Tuesday, becoming the first Black woman to lead any U.S. state, media projections said. Bottoms beat Republican billionaire health‑care executive Rick Jackson after a closely watched race. The win returns the governor’s office to Democrats for the first time in over twenty years, ending a long stretch of Republican control. The result is a blow to President Donald Trump, who endorsed Jackson in July and campaigned with him in Atlanta in the final weeks. Former President Barack Obama appeared at a rally for Bottoms in late October, adding national attention. In the same election, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff secured re‑election, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins, reinforcing Georgia’s status as a swing state after backing Joe Biden in 2020 and Trump in 2024. Bottoms served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022, then joined the Biden White House as director of the Office of Public Engagement and later advised Biden’s 2024 campaign. During the campaign she promised to expand Medicaid, lower family costs and protect voting rights. Jackson entered the race in February, portraying himself as an outsider who grew up in Georgia’s foster‑care system, and spent more than $100 million of his own fortune, having previously defeated Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, Trump’s original pick, in a June primary runoff. Outgoing Governor Brian Kemp was term‑limited and could not run again.

Context
