Brown bread is not automatically healthier than white bread, according to Dr Nethra N, an internal medicine consultant at Manipal Hospitals in Bengaluru. The internet’s claim that switching to brown bread improves health overlooks the fact that colour alone does not determine nutritional value. Bread quality depends on the flour type, processing level and added ingredients. Whole wheat bread keeps the bran, germ and endosperm, making it richer in dietary fibre, B‑vitamins and minerals, which aid digestion, keep you full and help regulate blood sugar. Some brown‑coloured loaves are made mostly from refined flour and only get their colour from caramel or molasses; their fibre, sugar, salt and fat levels can be similar to white bread. White bread, made from refined wheat flour, lacks most bran and germ, so it contains less fibre and can cause a quicker rise in blood glucose, but it is not harmful if eaten in reasonable portions within a balanced diet. Dr Nethra advises shoppers to read ingredient lists, look for whole wheat or whole grain flour as the first ingredient, and compare fibre, added sugar and sodium content. Labels such as “multigrain” or “brown” do not guarantee whole‑grain content. For people with diabetes, insulin resistance or other metabolic issues, choosing a higher‑fibre whole‑grain option can be beneficial, though total carbs and portion size remain key. Those with coeliac disease must avoid wheat‑based breads, including whole‑wheat, and opt for gluten‑free alternatives. ## Context Bread colour can be misleading; true nutritional quality comes from the grain’s intact components and the overall ingredient profile, a point highlighted by health experts across many diet discussions.
