Tamil Nadu to Form District Advisory Panels for Sales Tax Grievances
Reported by Faizan Khan (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Tamil Nadu's administration has announced the creation of advisory panels at the district level to handle complaints from sales tax payers. Each panel will be led by the district's Collector and will work to fix problems in tax administration locally. The move follows a meeting chaired by Commercial Taxes Minister D. Logesh Tamilselvan.
Members
Panel members will include the Joint Commissioner of State Tax, a Deputy Commissioner of State Tax from outside the district headquarters, the Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence, officials from the State-level Sales Tax Advisory Committee, a Superintendent or Assistant Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Central Tax, and the general manager of the District Industries Centre. Ex‑officio participants will be one MLA from the district, two representatives each of farmers, industry and trade (both wholesale and retail), plus one each from cooperative bodies, cottage‑industry groups and consumer forums. The district’s Deputy Commissioner of State Tax will serve as the committee secretary. All Joint Commissioners of State Tax have been instructed to set up the panels by 30 November, and the first gathering is to occur by 15 December. The panels are slated to operate until 30 November 2029.
Context
These committees aim to bring tax dispute resolution closer to taxpayers, reducing the need to approach state headquarters. By involving local officials and stakeholder groups, the government hopes to speed up grievance redressal and improve compliance.
