Students in Chikkamagaluru need to study science and math because these subjects serve as the primary tools to make sense of the natural world. Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner Bhanwar Singh Meena shared this view while speaking to students on Wednesday. He formally opened an interschool science and math competition in the town, which was organised together with Excellent Moodubidire. Mr. Meena praised the students who took part and asked them to stay curious about everyday happenings by raising basic questions. He explained that people can decode nature through scientific inquiry. To test their thinking, he posed puzzles about sound and weight on the moon, lunar surroundings, and old food preservation methods used prior to refrigerators. The students gave correct replies, noting that sound needs an atmosphere to travel and that gravity changes a person's weight on the lunar surface. The official also pointed to common sights like natural colours and the reason ice stays afloat on water, telling learners to think deeply about such facts. He advised them to look beyond classroom books and link their lessons to practical, real-life examples. If doubts arise, he told them to consult their teachers or look up the answers online.

Context

Interschool science festivals and quiz competitions are common events across Indian districts meant to spark interest in STEM fields among young learners. Such gatherings encourage children to apply textbook concepts to practical questions outside the formal classroom setup.
