The Kerala government has formed a new State Road Safety Mission led by the Chief Minister to bring down deaths from road accidents. Transport Minister C.P. John announced that the official launch will take place on November 15 at Ernakulam Town Hall, and film actor Mammootty has taken on the role of brand ambassador for the program.

Project Goals And Actions

Road accidents claim 3,600 lives every year in the State. The mission aims to lower this death toll in steps through public awareness campaigns and strict rule enforcement. These awareness efforts will reach everyone from first-grade students to adults, and schools will soon include road safety in their regular curriculum. Authorities also plan to launch mobile apps for this work.

Ground-Level Changes

Safe driving clubs will be set up at local and district levels to build better habits on the ground. The project includes upgrading roads, fixing dangerous accident-prone spots, repairing signboards, widening zebra crossings, and using color-coded road markings to create safe zones. At the same time, officials warn that strict legal action awaits anyone who breaks traffic rules or shows deliberate negligence on the road.

Context

Road safety missions of this kind are often launched by governments to bring together traffic police, transport departments, and local bodies under one unified plan. Accident-prone spots and poor road design remain major contributors to highway injuries across the country.
