Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given U.S. first lady Melania Trump a state honour for her humanitarian work and help for Ukrainian children.

The Award Details

The presidential decree, dated November 2, noted her personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine. It specifically mentioned her work to help Ukrainian children, including those deported or forcibly moved from Russian-occupied areas. She received the Order of Princess Olga, 1st class. This award goes to women who make exceptional contributions in areas like science, education, culture, and charitable work.

Evacuation Effort

Ukrainian officials stated that Melania Trump played a key role in setting up a six-day ceasefire. This pause allowed the evacuation of civilians from the frontline southern town of Oleshky, which was occupied by Russia. The ceasefire ended on Sunday, November 1, 2026. It marked the longest local pause in fighting since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Melania Trump said that nearly 800 people were evacuated during this time.

Context

State honours are often used by governments to recognise international figures who aid their nation during times of crisis. High-level diplomatic and humanitarian efforts can sometimes create temporary local ceasefires in active conflict zones.
