GeneralIIT Delhi doctoral researcher passes away after weeks in hospital following incident at rented home

A doctoral researcher from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi passed away on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He had been receiving medical care there since August 18 after neighbours discovered him injured and unresponsive inside his rented home in Munirka Village in south Delhi. Kishangarh police station officials confirmed that an abetment of suicide case has been filed under section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators have not yet specified if any particular individual is named in the complaint. The police action follows instructions from the Supreme Court alongside a formal complaint from the security officer of the engineering institute. Neighbours broke open the locked door of the residence on August 18 and police rushed the victim to the hospital trauma centre. He spent over 45 days receiving medical treatment before dying on October 3. Authorities noted that the event took place off-campus and that CCTV footage from outside the building shows he was alone inside, with family members and witnesses raising no suspicions against anyone else.

Context

This incident marks the third student death linked to IIT Delhi this year, following two previous cases that occurred directly on the campus grounds. Mental health concerns and student welfare pressures in premier higher education institutions have drawn significant scrutiny from authorities and the public across the country in recent times.
