GeneralUttar Pradesh introduces four new sugarcane strains to lift farm output

Uttar Pradesh has cleared four new sugarcane varieties for farming to raise both crop yield and sugar production across the state. A meeting of the Seed Cane and Sugarcane Variety Approval Sub-Committee led to the rollout, backed by data from the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research in Shahjahanpur and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research in Lucknow.

Yield Details

State Cane Commissioner Ministhy S. stated that the early-maturing variety CoS.23232 gives an average plant crop yield of 95.56 tons per hectare. That output sits 9.44 percent higher than the standard variety Co.0238. The new strain also resists Red Rot disease and shows strong ratoon performance while beating older options on both yield and sugar recovery.

Policy Changes

Additional Cane Commissioner and UPCSR Director Abhishek Anand noted that the sub-committee also approved an early-maturing variety from the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research in Lucknow. Authorities will phase out six older, unpopular sugarcane varieties with very low farming area over the next two years to protect farmer interests.

Context

Uttar Pradesh stands as one of India's top sugarcane-producing states, where agricultural research institutions routinely develop better crop strains to deal with plant diseases and boost rural incomes. Introducing higher-yielding varieties helps farmers handle market demands while keeping local sugar mills supplied with better raw material.
