GeneralFormer Bastar Security Camp Transformed Into Student Hostels

An old security camp in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region now functions as a student hostel following years of anti-Maoist operations in the area. Since August, the Bhatpal campus has housed Scheduled Tribe boys from remote villages affected by Maoism, including Abujhmad where security forces recently reported multiple surrenders and clashes.

Hostel Facilities

The facility includes two distinct hostels serving different age groups. The pre-matric hostel for Classes 6 through 10 currently houses 114 students, exceeding its sanctioned capacity of 100. Meanwhile, the post-matric hostel for Classes 11 and 12 holds 39 students against a sanctioned limit of 50. Narayanpur collector Namrata Jain noted that the project solves a major problem by providing safe local accommodation for students who previously lacked access to post-matric housing for higher education. Authorities are now planning another hostel in Kurushnar at the edge of Abujhmad, while a separate former camp nearby will soon reopen as a girls' hostel.

Context

Security camps in remote forested districts often transition into civilian infrastructure as security control expands into previously contested regions. Local administrations frequently prioritize student housing and modern residential schools in these areas to improve literacy and connect isolated tribal youth with mainstream educational opportunities. Such initiatives form part of broader state efforts to develop districts historically impacted by left-wing extremism.
