Virat Kohli and Joe Root both have a chance to break big batting records held by Sachin Tendulkar. Dinesh Karthik, a former Indian cricketer and the batting coach for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, shared his thoughts on their chances during a chat on Cricbuzz. He stated that it is very hard for Kohli to reach 100 centuries, a feat only Tendulkar has achieved so far. However, Karthik feels Root has a good chance of passing Tendulkar's Test run total of 15,921. He noted that Root plays a lot of Test cricket, stays very fit, and scores runs consistently. Kohli recently became only the second player after Tendulkar to score 15,000 runs in the 50-over format during the first ODI against West Indies. Tendulkar needed 377 innings to reach this mark, while Kohli did it in 303 innings. Kohli has already won one ODI World Cup at home in 2011, though his team lost the final to Australia. He told broadcaster JioStar that the upcoming tournament will be his fifth and final ODI World Cup for India. He mentioned his motivation is to leave everything on the field to win the trophy. He also explained that a 50-over World Cup requires T20 intensity across roughly 10 games in foreign conditions, which takes a massive physical and mental toll.
Context
Record-chasing in international cricket often brings intense public scrutiny as modern players approach milestones set by legends like Sachin Tendulkar. Playing across multiple formats while managing fitness levels remains a major challenge for senior players nearing the end of their careers.
