An Indian-born female cheetah named KJP21 has given birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park, bringing India's total cheetah population to 60. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav shared the update, noting that the 32-month-old mother is the third Indian-born female cheetah to give birth, following Mukhi and KGP12. Out of the 60 total cheetahs in the country, 41 were born on Indian soil.

Genetics And Lineage

The arrival of the five cubs introduces a new genetic lineage to the country. Their father is a Botswanan male cheetah, marking the start of the Botswanan lineage in India. Union Minister Yadav congratulated the veterinarians, field staff, and managers whose work supports Project Cheetah. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also praised the team, calling the birth a proud moment for wildlife conservation.

Context

Project Cheetah is an ongoing wildlife conservation effort in India aimed at restoring the cheetah population after the animal went extinct in the country decades ago. Bringing in animals from different regions helps maintain genetic health and diversity in the growing population.
