Experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will captain an Indian team featuring several IPL stars in the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament, running from October 30 to November 1. Jagran reports that Bhuvneshwar, who has been away from the national team for a long time, has been handed this major leadership responsibility as he continues to push for a comeback. He plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and has played a key role in helping teams win two titles.
Team Lineup and Format
Apart from Bhuvneshwar, the six-player squad includes Krunal Pandya, Shashank Singh, Rahul Tewatia, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi, and T. Natarajan. Except for Shashank Singh, all other members of the team have previously played international cricket for India. The format features only six players on the field at a time, leaving batters very little time to settle in, which is why the team prioritizes players who can change the course of a match in just a few balls. Bhuvneshwar will use his long international and IPL experience with the new ball, while Krunal Pandya contributes with both bat and ball as an all-rounder. Nitish Rana brings aggressive top-order batting, Shashank Singh and Rahul Tewatia serve as finishers, Rahul Tripathi is known for his aggressive strokeplay, and left-arm fast bowler T. Natarajan adds variety to the bowling attack.
Tournament Context
Cricket Hong Kong, China marketing and commercial director Anurag Bhatnagar expressed happiness over the squad selection, calling it one of the strongest Indian teams in the history of the tournament and noting it will greatly boost viewership. Pakistan enters the 2026 edition as the defending champion after beating Kuwait in last year's final to claim their sixth Hong Kong Sixes title. India also competed last year, opening with a two-run DLS win over Pakistan before exiting after subsequent losses, and aims for a much better showing this time. The three-day event takes place at Hong Kong's Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground, featuring eight major cricketing nations alongside four associate members.
Context
Short-format cricket tournaments like the Hong Kong Sixes rely heavily on fast-paced action, where teams packed with big-hitters and experienced bowlers can quickly turn momentum. Such competitions give veteran players a platform to showcase their skills in high-energy matchups before global audiences.
