Dr. Sandip Pal, a senior consultant in interventional gastroenterology and hepatology at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Mukundapur, Kolkata, stated that most burping is simply swallowed air escaping. However, persistent belching is not always just a quirk of eating too fast.
Causes of Belching
Burping is normally a routine bodily function that happens when people drink, eat too fast, or talk, which causes them to swallow air. Most people burp about 30 times a day. Certain foods and drinks also add to gas, including carbonated beverages, alcohol, and gas-producing items like beans, onions, cabbage, and broccoli. Aside from diet, stress and anxiety can lead to frequent burping. This includes supragastric belching, where a person swallows air unconsciously and pushes it back out before it reaches the stomach. It also includes aerophagia, which involves swallowing too much air due to nervous habits and can cause bloating and abdominal distension.
When to See a Doctor
While burping is normally harmless, Dr. Pal warned that people should not ignore persistent and bothersome belching when it comes with certain warning signs, noting that treatment always depends on the exact root cause.
Context
Digestive health issues often require professional medical evaluation when symptoms become persistent or interfere with daily comfort. Doctors typically look at overall diet, lifestyle habits, and underlying stress levels to diagnose the specific cause of excessive gas and related symptoms.
