Meta Buys AI Coding Startup Conductor to Boost Tech Tools
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · TechCrunch ·
Meta has bought Conductor, an artificial intelligence coding startup that lets users start software projects by setting up multiple agents into parallel workspaces. Axios first broke the news, and Conductor later shared the update on its own blog. Founder and CEO Charlie Holtz shared the news on Wednesday, stating that Conductor is joining Meta. He added that the team has major plans for a new interface and teased a new release for customers by early next year. On X, Holtz mentioned he is excited to work with Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang and Superintelligence Labs head of product Nat Friedman. Meta confirmed the purchase to TechCrunch but declined to share further details about the deal.
Details and Timeline
Founded in 2024, Conductor launched its core product last summer. The platform lets software engineers run agentic teams in the cloud, locally, or on a phone to work on separate parts of a project at the same time. These agents come from major labs like OpenAI and Anthropic rather than being built in-house. Holtz stated that current features will keep working as usual until early next year. The one exception is the cloud service, which will shut down on November 20, leading the company to delete user cloud data.
Context
Meta has stepped up its artificial intelligence efforts over the past several months after earlier falling behind in the space. The company launched its own coding agent called Muse Code in August and reported that its Muse agents have passed 10 million users. Tech companies frequently buy smaller startups to bring in specialized talent and technology for their growing artificial intelligence divisions.
