Saltwater crocodile spotted near popular Queensland tourist island
Reported by Danish Ansari (Fact-Checker) · ABC News Australia ·
A two-metre saltwater crocodile spent several hours close to the shore at Fitzroy Island off Cairns on Monday, forcing snorkellers out of the water and prompting safety warnings. Fitzroy Island Resort and ferry staff issued warnings and put up new signs after the animal appeared 29 kilometres off the coast.
Witness Accounts
Bundaberg-based sailor Mark Fletcher saw the reptile while checking a faulty propeller from his yacht. He heard people screaming from the beach and rushed ashore, learning the crocodile had swum near two snorkellers who quickly left the water. Scottish tourist Kyle O'Shea and his girlfriend also watched the animal bobbing on the waves from the shore after ferry crew members warned them about the sighting during their trip.
Resort Response
Fitzroy Island Resort general manager Dallas Bickle called the sighting rare but said the property increased patrols, shoreline checks, and communication with guests and tour operators. The animal is believed to be a young male looking for new territory during breeding season and has not been seen near the island since Monday night. Queensland's environment department confirmed it is investigating the sighting and monitoring the area.
Context
Crocodile sightings are uncommon around Fitzroy Island, with the last known occasion happening nearly two years ago. Warning signs typically stay on the island for seven days following a sighting to ensure visitor safety.
