House Democrats Outline Oversight Plans and Speaker Bid
Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · CBS News - Politics ·
California Representative Robert Garcia announced four main focus areas for the House Oversight Committee in the next Congress, including the Trump family business dealings, corporate corruption, Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions, and the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Garcia singled out Stephen Miller, Corey Lewandowski, Kristi Noem, and members of the Trump family, stating they will be asked to testify before the U.S. Congress. Garcia acknowledged the Trump administration Justice Department is unlikely to enforce cooperation, but noted Democrats can sue on behalf of the House and pursue civil contempt charges in court. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis responded that the president is willing to work with anyone to deliver victories, but warned that sham investigations work against the American people. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries officially announced his candidacy for House speaker in a letter to the Democratic caucus, laying out priorities that include reversing cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, extending Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, ending the Iran war, and rolling back tariffs. House members will elect a speaker in early January. In North Carolina's Ninth Congressional District, GOP Representative Richard Hudson called his Democratic opponent Richard Ojeda to concede, though CBS News rates the race as likely Democratic. California's 34th District saw democratic socialist Angela Gonzales-Torres oust incumbent Representative Jimmy Gomez, who had faced a House Ethics Committee investigation regarding sexual misconduct allegations. New York Representatives Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen both won reelection in their districts. In Michigan's 10th District, Democrat Christina Hines beat Republican Michael Bouchard for the seat currently held by John James. Progressive William Lawrence defeated one-term Republican Representative Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th District, and Democrat Sean McCann defeated GOP Representative Bill Huizenga in Michigan's 4th District. In California's 22nd District, GOP Representative David Valadao lost his reelection bid to Democrat Randy Villegas, making him the last Republican who voted to impeach President Trump over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot to lose reelection or retire.
Context
House control determines which party holds committee chairmanships and sets the legislative agenda in Washington. Committee investigations and subpoena powers provide the majority party with significant tools to examine executive branch actions and administration officials.
