Medical Mission

A 13-member team of medical specialists from India flew to Mauritius to save the life of 27-year-old Elodie Thomas, who was critically injured by a bullet near Port Louis on October 9. Officials stated that a police officer allegedly fired the shot, which caused major unrest, road blockades, and protests on the island nation. Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam urged the public to stay calm while the incident faced an official investigation.

Surgery And Recovery

Health Minister Anil Bachoo called Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava on the night of October 10 to ask for medical help. Indian authorities contacted Hyderabad-based KIMS Hospital, and doctors decided that moving the patient to India was too risky. A team of five doctors and eight specialists and technicians arrived in Mauritius on October 12. Neurosurgeon Dr Kapil Khandelwal and delegation head Dr Rakesh Jalla managed the complex case, which involved a bullet near the ear threatening sensitive neurological structures. Doctors used a WhatsApp group to share scans and vital signs before the surgery. The operation succeeded without any infections or neurological damage, and Thomas is now recovering and able to walk a few steps.

Context

International medical cooperation often relies on established ties between nations during critical emergencies when local facilities require specialized surgical expertise. Medical teams coordinate across borders using digital tools like messaging apps to share patient data and plan complex interventions before arrival.
