Strong Corporate Earnings Help Indian Stocks Outperform Wider Asian Markets
Reported by Kunal Bhatia (Senior Writer) · Livemint - Markets ·
Indian shares are pulling ahead of other Asian markets as stronger corporate profits and a slow return of foreign buyers strengthen the outlook for the local stock market.
Earnings And Sectors
Profits at about two-thirds of BSE 100 companies reporting results jumped 20 percent from a year earlier in the September quarter, according to Citigroup Inc. This marks the fastest growth in at least five quarters and beats market estimates. Consumer staples, steel and financials are among the sectors that saw upgrades in their earnings.
Market Standing
This profit growth is putting India's $5.1 trillion market back on the radar for investors after high prices, heavy foreign outflows and low exposure to artificial intelligence hurt earlier sentiment. Since Oct. 1, the Nifty 50 index has climbed 6 percent through Wednesday, while the MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 7.5 percent. Overseas investors have turned net buyers of local shares for the past three weeks, easing the pain of more than $30 billion withdrawn earlier this year. Rajat Agarwal, an Asia strategist at Societe Generale SA, noted that earnings are holding up well while valuations are less demanding, making the country a bright spot in the region. Citi analysts Surendra Goyal and Vijit Jain also pointed out that rising global worries over artificial intelligence infrastructure are pushing the focus back toward markets with steady growth and fair prices after recent market corrections.
Risks And Weaknesses
Despite the upbeat trends, major risks still threaten the market. High oil prices remain a big worry for an economy that depends heavily on energy imports, as costly oil can fuel inflation, squeeze profit margins and push down the rupee, which traded near a record low last month. At the same time, the speed of earnings upgrades remains slow. The 12-month forward earnings-per-share estimate for Nifty 50 members grew just 1.6 percent during the current reporting season, trailing the 5 percent growth seen in MSCI's regional gauge.
Context
Major stock indices like the Nifty 50 track the overall performance of top publicly traded companies in a country, serving as a key health check for the broader economy. Foreign institutional investors often move money across developing and developed markets based on local corporate profits, currency stability, and global risk factors.
