Indian banking and financial stocks rallied sharply on Thursday, November 5, outperforming the broader market as investors cheered Democrats winning the US midterm elections, renewed foreign investor buying, and a steep drop in crude oil prices.

Market Gains

The Nifty Financial Services index surged nearly 3% intraday, while the Nifty Bank index advanced 2.2%, easily beating the Nifty 50 which gained nearly 2%. All stocks inside the Nifty Bank index traded in positive territory during the session. SBI Cards led the financial stock gains by rising over 6%. Shriram Finance, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company, Bajaj Finance, and HDFC AMC each jumped over 5%. Muthoot Finance rose 4.5%, while Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, REC, and LIC Housing Finance added over 2% each.

Bank Performance

Inside the banking pack, AU Small Finance Bank led the Nifty Bank gainers by climbing over 4%. IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank, and ICICI Bank advanced between 3% and 4% each. Canara Bank and HDFC Bank gained over 2% each, while Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, and Kotak Mahindra Bank added over 1% each.

Catalysts and Expert Views

Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, ending two years of unified Republican control under President Donald Trump. Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services Ltd, noted that a split government could limit Trump's ability to run aggressive trade and tariff policies. Meanwhile, Brent crude slid to a two-month low of $94 per barrel, easing inflation fears in oil-import-dependent India. Foreign investors also pumped roughly ₹17,235 crore into Indian equities across just three trading sessions in November. Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President-Research at Bajaj Broking, pointed out that Bank Nifty formed a bullish candle above its 50-day exponential moving average and closed past the 55,913 level.

Context

Falling crude oil prices directly reduce the import bill for India, which buys a vast majority of its oil from overseas markets. US political shifts routinely influence global capital flows into emerging markets like India as overseas institutional investors rebalance their portfolios based on trade policy outlooks.
