Brian Bennett will captain Zimbabwe in the two‑Test series against Afghanistan scheduled in the UAE, the first match beginning on 5 November in Sharjah. Regular skipper Richard Ngarava is absent after sustaining a back injury. Veteran leg‑spinner Graeme Cremer, who last played a Test in December 2017, has earned a spot in the 17‑man squad. Fast bowler Tanaka Chivanga also misses out because of injury. All‑rounder Antum Naqvi joins the side after satisfying ICC eligibility rules. Kundai Matigimu and Vincent Masekesa are the other returnees to the Test lineup. The full squad comprises Brian Bennett (captain), Antum Naqvi, Ben Curran, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Graeme Cremer, Innocent Kaia, Ernest Masuku, Kundai Matigimu, Newman Nyamhuri, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Vincent Masekesa, Wellington Masakadza and Wessly Madhevere.
Context
Zimbabwe is rebuilding its Test unit after a period of limited success and frequent changes. Adding experienced players like Cremer aims to bring stability, while meeting ICC eligibility allows fresh talent such as Naqvi to contribute. The series offers a chance to assess the new leadership under Bennett and gauge the side’s progress ahead of future contests.
