Malkajgiri Police Arrest Seven Members of Illegal Loan Ring
Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·

Police in Malkajgiri have arrested seven people for running a fraudulent lending network that cheated borrowers by taking high advance interest and forcing them to sign blank cheques. The arrests were carried out by the Special Operations Team of the L.B. Nagar Zone.
The Accused
The four suspects taken into custody on Thursday are Kumbam Nagamma, Kandela Gangamma, Kandela Mangamma, and Adulla Anusha. Three more suspects, Kandela Shiva Kumar, Vagrigiri Indramma, and Gaikwada Swapna, were arrested earlier on October 26. Four additional suspects remain on the run.
Methods and Targets
The group targeted senior citizens, employees, business owners, and others facing money troubles. They used middlemen to offer large loans, but only handed over a small part of the promised funds while taking huge cuts as advance interest. They forced victims to hand over signed blank cheques, bonds, and promissory notes for much higher amounts than what was actually lent. When victims tried to get their documents back or questioned the high demands, the gang threatened them with physical attacks and false police cases.
Victims and Seizures
Among those targeted was an elderly woman doctor who needed money to buy an artificial intelligence machine for cancer detection. The group took her Skoda and Toyota Innova Hycross cars after collecting money and documents from her. Other victims included a private teacher, a driver, a driver's friend, and a retired worker from the Veterinary Department. Police seized the two cars, nine standard mobile phones, three smartphones, 25 promissory notes, 22 blank cheques, two land passbooks, two sale deeds, and cash amounting to over 47,000 rupees.
Context
Illegal lending operations often exploit people who need quick cash and cannot access formal banking loans easily. Authorities frequently warn the public against informal money lenders who use blank signed cheques and promissory notes as leverage to trap borrowers in endless debt cycles.
