Tennis player Jessica Pegula was caught on a courtside microphone calling teenage rival Mirra Andreeva a diva after a practice session in Indian Wells, California. The Women's Tennis Association live-streamed the session ahead of the WTA Tour Finals, picking up private comments where 32-year-old American Pegula told her coach Mark Knowles that Andreeva needs to be humbled. Pegula also criticized Andreeva's coach, 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, stating that Martinez encourages the teenager's behavior and complains constantly during practice. Pegula's agent Chris McCormack stated that the player was completely unaware her private conversation could be heard by microphones or broadcast to the public. McCormack added that Pegula has since contacted those involved directly. The WTA admitted full responsibility for the incident, and YouTube streams of the practice sessions have been removed. Despite the criticism, Pegula also praised Andreeva as smart, wonderful, and a great mover, while comparing her on-court potential to world number four Coco Gauff. In a separate incident during the same event, world number one Elena Rybakina had a tense exchange with her coach Stefano Vukov before practicing with Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Vukov had previously been suspended by the WTA in February 2025 following an investigation into his behavior before returning to Rybakina's team that August.

Context

Live-streaming practice sessions and placing behind-the-scenes cameras at tennis tournaments have drawn criticism from players concerned about privacy. Pegula previously spoke out about extra cameras at the Australian Open, calling the constant filming an invasion of privacy.
